Cerclage followup appointment 14 weeks

Well today I went for my follow up appointment for my cerclage I had placed last week due to a shortening cervix. My husband picked me up after leaving work and we made our way to the afternoon visit. I had to laugh because as I walked out the door, my dog looked at me with the saddest eyes as if to say, "Is it true? Are you really leaving me?" I hadn't really left the house in a week following my surgery so I think she got used to me being a permanent fixture on the couch!

As always, my OB's office was packed. But shortly after we arrived we were called back for the ultrasound. I wonder if the nice tech who I always have heard my heart pounding, because it sounded like the Kentucky Derby was being held in there! Once the transvaginal ultrasound was underway I began to relax a little bit because the tech always turns the sound on right away. I zoned out hearing the thump thump thump of Spot's little heartbeat, entrancing me into a happy bliss. It measured a beautiful 154 bpm. When the verdict was in, we couldn't determine the gender AGAIN because Spot had their legs firmly closed! To be honest, at this point in time, I could care less. As long as we still are blessed enough to even have our little Spot - obsessing about the gender almost seems silly. Things like that just don't seem so important anymore. We didn't get too many fabulous shots of Spot because the star of the show was not the baby, but instead my cervix and the cerclage sewed in it. Just like growing up, in school the trouble makers get all the attention! Here's a couple we got though. We actually got more pictures and DVD time of my cervix than Spot. In the last one, the little white flecks in the picture near the middle and going upward are all the sutures sites of the cerclage. I guess they do about 20+ stitches just to hold things tight.

I knew we would get a better description of things from my OB, but when I asked the tech how my cervix looked she said "things seem to be holding up." Well, that's got to be good I thought. Next, we hopped into the room next door and waited for my OB. Once he met with us, he did an exam to take a closer up look at the cerclage and cervix. He said that he really likes to keep a close eye on the actual surgical site the first few weeks following placement for any signs of infection or loosening. Infection can occur even under good circumstances because technically they have left a foreign object in a site that directly opens to the baby. If that occurred then chorioamniotitis sets in and causes miscarriage. So I can understand why they're so particular about how things look.

The good news was that the surgical site looked great, no sign of infection. My OB must had been really happy with that because he looked at my husband sitting in the chair and said, "Do you want to see what a cerclage looks like?" My husband immediately turned two shades whiter and whispered, "Uh, no but thanks." My OB obviously knows me well, but not my husband! My husband, being the quiet engineer type has no interest in medical things (especially when they involve his wife's privates) and almost passes out at the sight of a drop of blood. My OB glanced up at me and winked, maybe he did know what my husband would say :-)

When discussing my current cervical length, my OB said that things were still short - but not any worse. He said that there was no sign of any funneling on ultrasound, which would had be a VERY bad indication. Whew! While hearing the words, "still short" doesn't give me warm fuzzies, it doesn't send me clambering up the wall either. I am not happy, I am not sad. I just am - if that makes any sense at all. When then I asked my OB "so now what does this mean, and what do we do now?" He calmly said, "all we can do is wait and see. Things can kind of go either way following seeing this, so we just wait." So I guess that's what we do. We wait.

It sounds like you had a good appointment! I'm glad things are staying nice and quiet in there.

Oh...I'm so anxious for you.

I'm glad that there's no infection, and no funneling. That's something, at least.

My husband would have reacted the EXACT same way. Hilarious!

No infection and it's not shortening, this awesome news Sara. There are so many factors to think about but for right now, it's doing what it should be doing and Spot is happy and that is all that matters.YAY!

The waiting must be difficult but you still manage to keep a great attitude! Glad things are going well. You are doing everything you can do for Spot ;-)

Also -- there is no WAY my husband would look either. He is not into medical stuff either.

Phew, glad to read that everything is holding tight.

My husband would probably have actually wanted to see...yeah he's a weirdo about medical stuff.

So, are you still on bedrest? When is your next appointment?

I'm so happy for the great results you got! I know it's probably not leaving you fully relieved, but at least it makes you one step closer. Every day that passes is one step closer to meeting little Spot!

Glad to hear things didn't get any worse at least. Keep resting and taking good care of yourself...you deserve it. As always, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hey Carrie27, thanks for your kind words. Do you have a contact info either email or a blog? When I click on your name it just takes me to a blank typepad screen that doesn't allow me to click on anything. I'd love to follow along with you as well!

You know, you would think that we would get so much better at waiting. I still suck at it. I'm glad the appointment showed no signs of infection or funneling. I will keep on sending positive thoughts that all keeps going well and that you will have a long time yet on that couch.
That is very funny about offering to let hubby see the cerclage.

It would hve been delightful to hear that you cervix had lengthened, but I am with you: I can live with it holding the line. Lack of funneling is also great.

Although it would be exciting to know the sex, in the midst of everything - I think it is just fine to wait, huh. Clearly, Spot wants to keep you in suspense anyhow!

I suppose you will remain on the couch? How about that placenta privia? Has it migrated at all? I hope so.

Just hold the line girl! You're doing great!

Hey-I'm new to your blog! Congrats on little Spot doing so well. Sounds like a stubborn one with the whole legs closed episode :)

Glad to hear that all is well. Keep it up Spot! And Cervix/Cerclage!

Hurry up and wait and "we'll just have to see" are both tough, but thankfully not the worst case scenario, either. I'll "wait" and "see" with you. I'm just so relieved to hear that Spot (and his/her stubborn legs) is still doing so well and that your cervix is behaving. I think that's cause for celebratory chocolate. :)

BTW - Carrie27's blog is Letting it Out; it's in my blogroll. :)

A relatively decent appointment, all things considered ... right? Or as my hubby has a habit of saying ... "It is what it is." Meaning, nothing more or less we can do about the situation.

Did I ever tell you I hate it when he says that?! As if that's supposed to make a person feel better. But I suppose it's the truth.

Sara, I'm continuing to pray that Spot stays put and the cerclage continues to do what it's supposed to. Remember what I said? I've seen cerclages work more than not work, given the cases that I review. I'm keeping you in the category that it's gonna work.

And, hey. Since I know how close we live to one another now ... I might have to do a drive-by and keep you company!!

HUGS ... and thanks for your kind words on my bloggie, too!

Thanks for stopping by and offering your congrats. I was so excited to hop over to your blog and see that you are happily expecting as well.

I hope that things continue to heal well and that there is never any sign of an infection. I love the pictures of your little "spot." I also love your sense of humor. I laughed a couple of times when reading your profile. You can be sure I will stop back in to be updated on your progress. :)

Sara,

Good luck with the wait. It's MUCH harder than it sounds when there's really very little under our direct control.

I'm so glad things are holding up and I really hope they continue to do so...

I just found your blog, and wanted to congratulate you on a successful follow up after your cerclage. I had an emergent cerclage placed at 20 weeks pregnant with twins -- my cervix had about 1 cm of length left and had started funneling -- it was very touch and go for the first few days, and I can still remember the tension I felt at my first u/s follow up afterward. I did 13 weeks of bed rest, and my water broke at 33w3d and I am holding one of my little miracles now as she sleeps... cerclages are a wonderful thing. Best of luck to you!
