Well yesterday I noticed that she was getting sicker and sicker as the day went, out of the blue. Normally spunky and bouncing off the walls (when she's not stealing my pillow) she was lethargic, hadn't gone to the bathroom all day and was having trouble jumping up or off the couch. When I tried to pet her throughout the day she would just yelp in pain if it was near her back end. Midday she started trembling and shaking that wouldn't stop. By now I had phoned my husband and told him I was making an urgent vet appointment for as soon as he could get home.
Since I had been a obedient patient and had not budged off the couch all day, I decided to venture with my husband to the vets office (that would be about 10% activity - 90% bedrest, right?) An hour later we left the vet's office without our little furchild. Dr. McVet said that she had a extreme case of a plugged anal gland that had turned into an abcess (gross I know). He needed to keep her overnight, put her to sleep and open up the gland to irrigate and drain things (doggie I & D for all you medical people out there). I asked him how this had come on so quickly and he said that with small dogs things go from minor to major fast and because they hide things so well. He said that there are no external signs or symptoms except tenderness to touch, which is why they hide it so well. Dr. McVet also said that this can happen even with having anal glands expressed at groomers, and that she would just need to come in once a month from now on for a more involved expressing at their office, and that she shouldn't have this problem again. Luckily our doghter (as we call her instead of our daughter) did great and is back home with me again. She is just doped up on some doggie pain medicine three times a day and antibiotics, and has a follow up appointment next week.
I think things like this are harder on us dog parents than the actual furry children. On the way home from the vet I cried, and my husband said, "Don't worry, she'll be fine. This is a smaller procedure than having a dog fixed, no big deal." I knew it was no big deal, but maybe it's all the darn pregnancy hormones. Regardless, if I feel this way about our dog, I dread the day our little Spot that we have on the way needs their first surgery or emergency. I pity the poor pediatricians or surgeons who have to witness my first child related future meltdowns :-) So on the way home yesterday we hit a drive thru ice cream shop and I treated myself to one of my old favorites - an oreo milkshake - and yes I ordered a large one. Suddenly things didn't seem so bad!
A little downside of my escapade outside to the vet, was some decent abdominal cramping that followed. It was enough I guess I'll have to mention it to my OB, and enough to make me not want to venture out too much in the next couple of days. Here is a picture of how my dog and I spent today, the day after her surgery last night. I'm glad we're back to our normal position as couch potatoes. Life is once again just how it's meant to be. All is right in the universe for now - at least in our little universe.

Glad pups is ok and that she is home with you again.
I loved your response to the meme. Your memoir seems to be "spot" on. Get it - I made a funny. Now stay put - dont make me come there.
Your dog is really cute and the picture of the two of you, Priceless. I hope she feels better soon, you too. I'm glad you're taking it easy after the big adventure, never a dull moment. Glad your family universe is calm again.
Actually, correction, it's a picture of the Three of you! Howdy, Lil' Spot!
Oh my gosh, it is the worst when any of our "babies" get sick. I am always worried to death.
Glad she's home with you where you (both) belong! That's a cute shot of you sleeping on the couch :)
I knew dogs had anal glands that could get blocked- but I didn't know groomers had to express them!
Now back to your office on the couch with the two of you :)

Definitely scary! I'm glad your doggie is home with you so you can be snuggle buddies again.
I would definitely call the doctor just to be safe, as well.
Awww! Your doghter is adorable! So glad she is feeling better. I wouldn't have wanted to let her go to the vet alone either. You're a great mom!
My goodness, your BFF (best furry friend) is adorable. So sorry she had to have the I&D, but so glad you caught it in time. Love the pics :)
You two re so freaking cute! I am sorry you had doggie health trauma - it sucks when you feel helpless to help a furry friend...
Ahh, the cramping. It sounds to me like yours is activity related, no? Or are you having it other than when you are just up and around? I have been starting with a lower backache in the evening followed by centralized shooting-like pains. Some times they feel a little like cramps, especially with the period-like bachache.
Well, perhaps since we are both getting this at 15 weeks is is just a sign of normal stretching? Yes, that must be all it is!!! I am a freaking genius. Guess neither of us needs to worry a bit:)
Rest up, my couch surfing friend. I'll being waiting to hear all about this weeks check up.

Oh geez, I'm so sorry about your fur-baby! I'm glad everything turned out ok though. What a sweet picture of you guys on the couch!
By the way, I'm so happy things are still going so well for you! Good for you for being such a good patient and staying off your feet! I know that must be really hard after awhile!
Let me know if/when you want company and/or food! I saw that you've been eating lots of Mexican food! Yummy! I LOVE mexican food! Fresh Guacamole and salsa with chips is my favorite!
Sorry to hear about the pooch! It's so scary when they're in need of medical attention because they can't actually talk to tell you how bad or not so bad it is.
Glad to see you're back to assuming the position on the couch.
love, love, love the 3 pictures series of the pillow stealing in progress. Glad she is on the mend -- bless her little heart!!! I am glad that spot is doing well -- keep on dancin little one... sam
Glad she is okay and the two of you are settled back in! nclm
What's your pup's name? Such a little cutie!
I just had to go here - but anal expressing? I've never heard of such a thing for dogs. It completely brings to mind the phrase "talking out of your ass." The next time Frank says something stupid, I'll tell him to stop anally expressing himself.
She is just too cute and I love how she sneaks in to steal your pillow. (:
I hope she is feeling better soon. It's so hard when our furbabies are hurting. Our geriatrics always have something going on to keep me worried.
I hope the 3 of you are back to resting now like old times.
Aww, what a sweet furry baby! I totally understand getting all emotional when something is wrong-I show off my cat like he's an actual baby ;)
Glad she's doing ok though!
Awwww, poor little puppy! I'm glad to hear that he is doing okay now. And, I think the pillow looks very comfy and I don't blame him for stealing it!
Seriously, how precious is she? I love dogs and want a small one like yours, but I already have two Labs and a baby on the way, so it shall be awhile until we get one. :-)
I am so glad she is okay. I know how scary it is when you have to take them in like that.
You guys are too cute snuggled on the couch.
Aww...your dogter is so cute!!!! You are so lucky to have a companion like her during all of this. My Gus is 120 pounds, so he's good for snoring and laying in my path, but not so much for cuddling.
I'm sorry to hear about her adventure, but glad she's home safe and sound.
Take good care of yourself. Cramping is scary. I'll be thinking about you.
What a sweet picture! I'm glad your dog is ok, and I understand about the emotions. When my kitty was sick earlier in the year, we were wrecks.
If you do read Middlesex, let me know what you thought of it. I'm very interested in how a fellow UUer would respond.
Take it easy! Cramping stay away!
Glad your puppy is ok, and you two can have pillow fights again!
OMG, what an adorable little pup! I love how she steals your pillow. :-) Glad she's feeling better and back home.
Visiting from NCLM
I am so glad she is okay. I was worried when I saw the title. You two look very comfortable together. My dog is such great company during the day. She's laying beside me right now.
What a cute bed rest buddy! Hope both of you ladies are feeling better :)
Glad to hear your doghter is ok! That's scary. Also, you two look so cute all cuddled up on the couch. Hope all is well and that you're feeling better!
Your doghter is so cute and I'm so glad she is feeling better. I recently had a scare with my dog too and it really made me appreciate all the time I spend with him from now on...not that I didn't before, but now he gets extra kisses and tummy rubs.
I'm glad the puppy is okay. I only recently learned about the anal gland issue, not pleasant!
Oh poor lil furbaby! you stay put!
So glad you fur baby is doing better and that it wasn't anything too serious! You two rest up! No more excitement!
I'm feeling TONS better, thank God! I'm just ready to get going on whatever is coming next for me!
I'm so glad your furbaby is OK! She is SO stinkin' cute!!
Poor puppy!
I'm glad your adorable doggy is all better! Those are such cute pictures of her stealing your pillow. Keep resting and feeling well!
My condolences to your dog...that must have been very painful for her. The pictures of her stealing the pillow is just to precious. And yes, there will be meltdowns in the future when your child is sick but luckily pediatricians are used to it.
Please stay on the couch.
Poor baby!!!!!!
I hope she feels better soon. =(
Your couch must feel so empty without her! And my word, she's cute.
*hugs*
Have you heard of Better BedRest? They are an organization that offers companionship, mainly via phone, to women on bedrest. check it out at www.betterbedrest.org.
My kitty was my companion when I was at home on BR. The provide so much comfort. Glad she's better.
Oh my, your dog is so cute.
And my cat loves it when I'm on bed rest. After my surgery, we were inseparable. I like to pretend it's me, but really it's the blanket.
Hope the bed rest isn't killing you. It always sounds better in theory than it is in reality.
I'm glad that your furbaby is ok. I know what you mean about it being harder on you than it is on them. Dixie Dog once had gastrointestinal problems and I was a wreck. She, however, was fine and dandy with it the next day!
What very sweet pics of you and your pup! Sorry to see you are on bedrest now. I haven't checked in in a while. Glad your doghter is okay and that you have her to keep you company.
you are so cute and i love Neela. She is such a little crack-nugget.
I'm glad I got to see you the other day and hope I can keep you company maybe every week until Spot is born! and then I'll come over to help you learn how to hold the baby.
Hmmm....perhaps you should blog about the first time you held Buttercup? hee hee...
Your puppy is adorable! I have a furbaby too, and he KNOWS he is our baby! He is as spoiled as they get- he has "the only child" syndrome. Admittedly, he is a bit selfish with his toys and his mommy when his doggy cousins come to play!
Glad to see you're doing well. We just got back last week from our vaca. to Ca. and I wanted to check on you!
Okay girlie. It's been a couple of days since I've heard anything from you. Are you and Spot okay?
Love your dog!! SO cute! Glad he is okay!!!
I'm glad to hear your puppy is doing better and has returned to her place on the couch!
