Today I had my nine week appointment with the peri from the maternal fetal medicine group. My husband met me at their office and we got to see little Spot on the ultrasound for quite awhile. Heartbeat was ticking away at 168. The ultrasound tech did both an abdominal one and atransvag one, and then the peri came in and wanted to do a transvag one himself, so it seemed to take awhile. We got 12 cool pictures to take home, but their printer printed most of them dark. When Spot first made his grand appearance on the screen, I heard my husband gasp. I thought something was wrong, but he was just sosurprised at how much bigger Spot had gotten since he saw the ultrasound in person two weeks ago. He was most amazed to see the heart beating so clearly. Last time he saw it, it was so tiny it was hard to find. The peri also seems to think he knows where the bleeding I'm having is coming from, finally!
When we were done with the ultrasound, we sat down with the peri to talk about things. He saw a complete placenta previa right now. He said many people have this early on in pregnancy and then it moves. However, he feels like with the cramped space that the baby and placenta have due to my unicornuate uterus, it may not. Furthermore, because of the location it was at, and due to the small space of my uterus he is pretty sure that is what is causing all of the bleeding. The problem with early ultrasounds (prior to seven weeks and even 8 sometimes) is that the exact location of the placenta is not easily seen, thus explaining why it has been difficult to visualize until now.
Spot is measuring only 6 days behind, instead of the 9 days he or she was behind last week, which is great. I won't bore you with all of the details of the appointment and discussion, since the peri loves to talk and we were there over two hours. But basically we'll just continue the weekly checks and ultrasounds for right now. I'm supposed to keep them informed as to how much red spotting I have, and if I have any bleeding to let my OB or him know right away. I am so glad I can actually call it spotting and not bleeding the last few days! We will know a better idea of how my cervix looks at 12-14 weeks to know if a cerclage will appear in my crystal ball future. He wants me to continue the progesterone through week 12.
Even though the little one is only nine weeks old, I was shocked to learn that Spot already has a functioning kidney and is urinating. I find that every time I go to the bathroom now, I wonder if both Spot and I are peeing at the same time! Another interesting thing I've discovered in reading is that Spot already has some fluid in his ears and is establishing a sense of balance. Hopefully, he or she will take after my husband since I am completely uncoordinated and am always tripping over my own two feet. I'm one of those people more likely to fall going up the stairs, than down. In addition, the iris of each of Spot's eyes are functioning, yet the eyelids are still fused shut. Perhaps that is how my husband feels when he is searching for his glasses in the morning?
I always leave feeling better than when I came, after seeing the little one on the screen. The office could check all of the boxes they felt like today or labeled me however they please : severely threatened spontaneous miscarriage, complete placenta previa, unicornuate uterus....bring it on! Nothing can squash my happiness that another week has passed. We've pulled through one more week closer to having a little one to take home someday. It's still so early, but if we keep making it one more week, and one more week, then eventually we'll be beyond the point of viability. Well, this has been a long enough post as is, I guess I'll have to save the rest of my rambling for another day!

Way to grow Spot!! I'm so glad everything is going well. I'm glad you got answers to your questions. That's funny about you and Spot going to the bathroom at the same time.
Sounds like your peri's office like mine. He loves to talk but I love to listen because he always fills me with positive news. So glad they found a reason for the bleeding - now they know what to watch/look for.
I am so glad you got to see spot and are feeling the one week closer mark. That is how i have taken my pregnancy - one week at a time.
Yay Spot! Keep growing big and strong!
Wonderful! I am glad that Spot is doing so well.
Sara, you have such a great attitude. I love reading your blog! You'll be amazed at how things move forward thinking of this as moving ahead one week at a time.
So glad you are getting good news...
And my placenta was at the bottom too until 18 weeks when it moved up. Now I 'could' have a vaginal delivery with the UU, but at this point, I don't want to tempt fate.
Enjoy your day!
Jennifer
I loved reading this post. I'm so glad you received a good report. You're comment about you and Spot using the bathroom at the same time made me chuckle! Taking it day by day sounds like a wonderful plan to me. :) *HUGS*
Spot is hanging on!! Wow 2 hour talk, i wish i could have that with my RE! I'll keep you posted on my results!
I'm so glad Spot is doing well, and you got some answers today about the bleeding. Hopefully the previa improves, but at least you'll have a good medical team keeping an eye on it!
You have such a great attitude!!!
Congrats! I am so glad to hear hat there is a reason! And it sounds like Spot is doing well!
So glad your 9 week scan went well! It sounds like you have a very attentive doctor, I'm sure you'll get good care. We'll all celebrate with you each weekly milestone that passes!
Yah for spot. As far as the "peeing at the same time goes" - my husband and I refer to that as the "synchro-tinkle." We thought it up once on a road trip when we both go to use the potty at a rest-stop. So yes, you and spot may very well be synchro-tinkling!! Pretty exciting stuff.
Also glad to hear you have an explaination for the spotting - and that it can happen in any darn ute, not just a UU. And gaining on growth - that is awesome!!!
Yay Spot!! I'm glad that todays appointment went well and you got some answers.
That's amazing. Only a few more weeks until your 2nd trimester!
Yay! I'm so glad you got some answers at this visit. I bet it felt great being able to spend so much time watching Spot.
Oh Sara, I practically cried reading this and looking at your pictures. I am so happy for you that things are going well. I think all that stuff about what Spot is doing right now is amazing too. How weird is it to think there is really a little person growing inside of you right now! That is completely, completely crazy. And wonderful. Congrats.
Spot is adorable -- I love that top picture. It looks like he/she is dancing upside down...
It is so stressful being pregnant isn't it --------- everything is out of your control.
Love the new car by the way!!!!
Fantastic pictures! I'm glad that the mystery is being sorted out, I hope it goes well and the placenta moves to a better location. I hope the weeks keep ticking by for you.
Horray Spot! You are the cutest little thing!
CONGRATS! Sounds like everything is moving right along! I was so proud when I saw my little one...I bet you were too!
Well, what a relief, that all sounds manageable and the fact that Spot is hanging in there like a trooper is wonderful. You are in my prayers and I am just sending you love like it's going out style. ;)
*hugs*
I'm happy with this progress & the wonderful medical group you actually have. We're going to pray our way through this one week at a time girl that Spt's going to be a beautiful healty baby.
Yay! Loved the U/S pics! That is just really cool!
I've always thought it was really cool how babies have every organ already formed by 10/11 weeks. They just need more time to grow and mature!
Hopefully that placenta moves to a better spot soon!
Ah! Spot is really starting to resemble a baby! I'm so happy this appointment went well for you and that you can breathe a bit over the spotting. I hope that everything continues to progress well for you and that you and spot keep safe and healthy!
What great pictures! Oh, and I totally think about the peeing thing too....except I find it more crazy that the little one is peeing inside of me AND drinking it =P
I'm so happy for you. Glad to hear that you've got some answers.
Hi Spot! Here's to me spoiling you and trying to keep Buttercup from beating you up after you make your appearance! Major love and hus to you and your Mommy!
Hey thanks for your positive thoughts on my blog. I hope you are right about my BFP. I am glad things are going so well for you!! Yay for Spot!
